About the Secretary
Michael D. Crews Secretary
Michael (Mike) Crews was appointed by Governor Rick Scott as Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections on December 17, 2012. Secretary Crews began his career with the state in 1984 as a Certified Correctional Officer at Apalachee Correctional Institute and served as a Correctional Probation Officer in Tallahassee. He also worked with the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission as a part-time officer.
Secretary Crews began his career with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in 1987 as a Standards and Training Specialist in the Professionalism Program. Over the next several years, he held positions within the program area, including Research and Training Specialist, Field Services Specialist, and Training & Research Manager. Mr. Crews then assumed the position of Manager over FDLE’s Criminal Justice Information Program’s Help Desk and Sexual Predator Program. Following this tenure, he was selected as the Training and Research Manager in FDLE’s newly created Leadership Center. Mr. Crews then served as Bureau Chief of Standards in the Professionalism Program overseeing Florida’s Officer Discipline and Alcohol Testing Programs as well as the Officer Records, Training Trust Fund, and Field Services Sections. He was then selected as the Director of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute and FDLE Leadership Center and served in that role until appointed as Director of the Professionalism Program within FDLE.
Michael Crews was selected to serve as the Deputy Secretary for the Florida Department of Corrections on November 25th, 2011. During his tenure as Deputy Secretary, Mr. Crews was instrumental in developing and implementing initiatives to achieve the Department’s top priorities – reviewing the department’s classification system, fostering community partnerships to assist with re-entry efforts, and enhancing the professional image of the agency. As the newly appointed Secretary, he is excited and honored to lead the agency where his career began.
He is a graduate from Florida State University and is a certified instructor through the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. He is also a graduate of the Chief Executive Seminar (Class 22), provided by the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute. Secretary Crews has been married to his wife Teri for 26 years and they have two daughters, Jennie and Kelly.
